Privacy Policy

At Old Frog, we take the privacy of our users seriously and are committed to protecting their personal information. This privacy policy outlines the types of personal information we collect and how it is used to improve the user experience of our educational app.

Collection and Use of Personal Information

We collect personal information from users when they create an account, such as their name and email address. This information is used to enable user logins and facilitate user support. It is never sold and never shared with third parties.

Information on User Engagement with the App

We may collect information about a user's interactions with the app, such as buttons clicked, screens visited,  the app's responsiveness, and any errors encountered. This information is used solely to improve app functionality and fix erroneous logic. It is not stored long-term and is never sold and never shared with third parties.

Information on User Progress in Learning Japanese

At the heart of the app are a number of working quizzes on various aspects of the Japanese language. We collect information about a user's familiarity with various parts of the language, such as individual hiragana, katakana, kanji, and vocabulary. These statistics enable us to design more focused, customized quizzes and also allow a user to track their progress over time. If a user pauses a subscription and then resumes it months or years later, all that information is available to help the user get back up to speed. We do not use this information to rank users, compare users, or profile users. It is never sold or shared with third parties.

User Audio Notes

An important feature is the ability to create audio notes associated with various aspects of Japanese. For example, a user may wish to record their own mnemonic for remembering a kanji. When that kanji is invoked, for example as an answer to a quiz or within the Browse facility, the user's own hint is available to be played or amended. The user's own presence in the app, via the immediacy of audio, improves memory and engagement. This is even more so when resuming Old Frog after a lapse of time - re-living one's first encounter with a word can quickly re-engage the user with the language. Audio notes are stored precisely for this reason. They are never sold and never shared with third parties.

Data Retention

By default the various sorts of data detailed above are retained for five years after the lapse of a user's most recent subscription, at no additional cost.  Thus users can come and go - for example a student may subscribe temporarily in preparation for an exam, or someone who enjoys an annual visit to Japan can pick up just where they left off, shortly before departure and throughout the length of their trip. This addresses one of the risks of language learning - that a language can be lost due to a temporary waning of energy and a subsequent feeling that re-catching up is just too irksome. Of course a user can request that all their data be erased immediately, with the understanding that should they re-subscribe some day, they will be missing these accumulated assets.

Security of Personal Information

We take appropriate measures to protect personal information from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.

Deleting Your Account

Clicking the Settings icon on the home page brings up the Settings view. At the bottom of the Settings view there is a prominent Delete Account button which can be clicked to delete your account and all of your accumulated data.

Changes to the Privacy Policy

We reserve the right to make changes to this privacy policy. Any changes will be reflected on this page. We will also warn users of upcoming changes and allow them to complete their current subscription under the previous policy.
